Yá’át’ééh! Aaron Tsosie here, the person behind the camera! 🎥 Welcome to Saturday’s 2026 Western Navajo Fair Pow Wow in Tuba City, Arizona! After filming Saturday morning’s parade, fighting through traffic, and finally making it to the fairgrounds, I arrived just in time for Grand Entry! 😂 I highly recommend checking out the Western Navajo Fair if you’re in the area or willing to make the drive. I drive an electric vehicle, so I had to fully recharge in Flagstaff before making the trip to Tuba City. Even after the weekend was over and I drove back to Flagstaff, I still had plenty of battery life left! It might be a little out of the way for some people, and we might be dancing under a tent in a more secluded location, but it’s our traveling community that makes these events so much fun and worth the trip. MCs Trevor Foster and Dennis Bedonie were both warm and welcoming throughout the evening. Trevor’s uncle humor is something I really appreciate because, unlike the crude jokes I personally dislike hearing at pow wows, his humor is lighthearted and often personal to the people around the circle. It shows that Trevor is part of the community and knows everyone visiting, and also invites new people to come talk to him! This was also my first time hearing Dennis Bedonie on the microphone, and honestly, it felt like listening to your own cheii behind the mic! 😂 Hearing his old-man Navajo during the Gourd Dance session was such a treat. There’s something special about hearing that familiar way of speaking that reminds you of home and the older generations in our communities. Arena Directors Kenny Donaghey and Aaron Canez were also kind and respectful. I only had one interaction with Aaron, but it left a good impression on me. While I was filming, he gently tapped me on the shoulder and politely asked me to make some room for the drum judges. It was a simple interaction, but it told me a lot. I’ve seen arena directors who approach their responsibilities more like dictators, kicking people on their shoes or raising their voices instead of simply asking for some space. That’s why I appreciated Aaron’s approach. He’s young, and to me, he represents a new generation coming into the pow wow arena. I hope we continue to see more pow wow staff who lead with kindness, patience, and respect. I also hope to document this changing of the guard as it happens. We have an opportunity to leave generational trauma behind and create a better environment for the generations coming after us. Our young people deserve to enjoy pow wows, learn about their cultures, and experience the same sense of togetherness that brings so many of us back year after year. Looking back on this weekend, I’m grateful for the people who make these events what they are. The dancing is important, but so are the conversations, the laughter, the familiar voices on the microphone, and the people who make you feel welcome when you arrive. I also want to presonally say thank you to Dawn & Karlis Beard, Randi & Paige Sandoval and their family, Tyrone & Denise Manymules and their family for supporting the work that I do, each had a a role in making sure that I was welcomed and supported while filming! Ahéhee’ for watching and supporting the work I do! It’s an honor to bring these videos to YouTube and help preserve these moments for our communities. ❤️ Sunday’s Western Navajo Fair Pow Wow video will be up soon!
