What a Normal German Town Looks Like

When I was a kid, I had a very definite opinion about Elmshorn: of all the not particularly attractive towns in the county of Pinneberg, this was the ugliest. Several decades later, I decided it was probably time to check whether that verdict still held up. So I followed the river, wandered through the old harbour and town center, found more surviving history than I remembered — and discovered that my childhood assessment was both right and wrong. Because maybe the interesting question isn't whether Elmshorn is pretty.
