THE AFRICAN KING WHO DEFEATED AN EMPIRE — THEN DISAPPEARED What happens when a powerful African king refuses to surrender his kingdom to a European colonial power? In the late 19th century, King Behanzin of Dahomey faced one of the most powerful colonial forces of his time. When France expanded its influence into West Africa, Behanzin refused to simply accept French control. The conflict became the Second Franco Dahomean War, fought from 1892 to 1894. Dahomey's forces, including its famous female military corps, resisted the French advance. The French eventually captured Abomey in November 1892, but Behanzin escaped and continued resisting before finally surrendering in January 1894. His surrender marked the end of Dahomey's independence. Behanzin was exiled first to Martinique and later to Algeria, where he died in 1906. But his story did not disappear. Today, Behanzin remains one of the most fascinating figures in the history of precolonial West Africa. His story raises difficult questions about resistance, colonialism, power, warfare and the complicated history of the Kingdom of Dahomey. In this documentary, we explore: • Who was King Behanzin? • How powerful was the Kingdom of Dahomey? • Why did France go to war with Dahomey? • How did Behanzin resist the French advance? • What happened when Abomey fell? • Why did Behanzin continue fighting after losing his capital? • Why was the king sent into exile? • What happened to Behanzin after leaving Africa? • Why is his legacy still remembered today? Watch until the end, because the final chapter of Behanzin's story is not simply about defeat. It is about what happens when a king loses his kingdom but refuses to disappear from history.
