Step inside 850 Lake Shore Drive, one of Chicago’s most fascinating historic lakefront buildings. Built in 1927 as the Lake Shore Athletic Club, 850 N. Lake Shore Drive has been part of Chicago for nearly a century. In this tour, I’m taking you inside to see how this historic building has evolved—from an exclusive athletic and social club, through its years associated with Northwestern University, to its preservation and transformation into condominium residences today. Along the way, we’ll look at some of the building’s remarkable history, including the era when men and women entered through separate entrances, its connection to the 1928 Olympic swimming trials, and the architectural details that have survived through multiple chapters of the building’s life. Then we’ll tour the building as it exists today including its historic common spaces, lake views, amenities and residences and see how nearly 100 years of Chicago history have been incorporated into modern condo living.
