Why did France hand over its military base in Ivory Coast without a fight? On February 20, 2025, France formally transferred control of the Port-Bouët military camp in Abidjan to the Ivorian armed forces. But behind the peaceful ceremony lies a much bigger story about colonial history, national sovereignty, military power, and France’s changing role in Africa. In this documentary, we explore how Ivory Coast moved from decades of close military cooperation with France to taking control of a major French military installation — and why its approach was different from the confrontational withdrawals in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. We uncover the history of French colonial rule, the 2002 civil war, the deadly 2004 Bouaké incident, and the role French forces played during the 2010–2011 political crisis. We also examine President Alassane Ouattara’s strategy, the changing security situation in West Africa, and what the handover means for the future of French influence across the continent. The story continues beyond the military base. We look at the return of the historic Djidji Ayokwe talking drum from France to Ivory Coast in 2026, and the wider debate over cultural restitution, colonial memory, and independence.
