I’m trying something new with a daytime sightseeing vlog. During my days off, I often visit wonderful places that feel worth capturing on video, but I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the footage. As filming became more enjoyable, I decided to edit it and share it here. I’m still learning, and I hope you’ll enjoy following along.
This time, I visited the Hamada Castle ruins in Hamada, Shimane Prefecture. The castle also appears in Ryotaro Shiba’s historical novel Kashin. During the Second Choshu Expedition in the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate, Choshu forces led by Omura Masujiro attacked the Hamada domain in the fighting on the Sekishu front. Facing defeat, the defenders set fire to their own castle before retreating.
On the hill where the ruins stand, you’ll also find a memorial to the Hamada domain, bearing an inscription written by Ryotaro Shiba.
The castle ruins are about a 20-minute walk from Hamada Station, on a small hill. The climb to the former main enclosure at the summit makes for a good workout. From the gate, stairs lead uphill past stone walls, some of which incorporate natural, unworked stones. Their rugged character makes them well worth a look. The sweeping views of the Sea of Japan from the summit are another highlight.
