Fall asleep to the whole story of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the road that tore itself in half four months after it opened. The road lifted in front of you like the deck of a ship, and then it came down, and the car ahead went out of sight over the top of it and came back. People drove out from the next county to feel that. They paid the toll, crossed, turned round at the far end and paid again to come back. It was the finest ride in the state and it came free with the crossing. It had been open four months and seven days when it tore itself in half and dropped six hundred feet of road into the water. The wind that morning was gentler than winds it had already ridden out. Nothing pushed it over — no gust at the wrong moment, no fault in the steel, no sum done wrong. The bridge was feeding the movement itself, and the harder it worked the more the air gave back. The men who drew it were not reckless. They were the most trusted in the trade, and their theory was right about everything it could see. For thirty years every long bridge had been built a little thinner than the one before it, and every single one of them was still standing. That is why this one fell. Tonight we stand on a road that will not hold still, from the first summer swell to the last car across, the dog nobody could get out, the film that went round the world, and the answer in the textbooks — which was wrong, and stayed wrong for fifty years.
