Ekadanta Vinayakam is a majestic Sanskrit composition of Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi on Lord Ganesha, set in Raga Nattai and Khanda Triputa Tala (2-kalai). This was presented by Vid. Bhargavi Balasubramanian ‪@bhargavibalasubramanian‬ along with Chidambaram G Badrinath & Shri Ravindrabharathy Sridharan for Madhuradhwani. Unlike many of Venkata Kavi’s other compositions in Nattai that are brisk and energetic, Ekadanta Vinayakam unfolds as a slow, weighty piece, bringing out a distinctly grand dimension of the raga. A striking feature of the composition is its beautiful madhyamakala passages across all three sections, as well as the composer’s masterful handling of the nine-beat tala — highlighting both its division into two equal halves and its 5+4 structure in accordance with the two angas of the tala. The lyrics extol Lord Vinayaka not only as the protector of the worlds and the bestower of the fruits of yaga, yoga, japa, tapas and dhyana, but also as one who bestows knowledge of sangeeta shastra, raga, tala and bhava. The charanam further celebrates him as one who imparts the wisdom of the Vedas and Vedanta and is revered by Vyasa. With its stately melodic treatment, intricate rhythmic framework and profound sahitya, Ekadanta Vinayakam is yet another brilliant example of Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi’s extraordinary synthesis of music, rhythm, scholarship and devotion. ========================== P ēkadanta vināyakam bhajāmi MK eesha priyakara tanujam guruguha vinutam anisham AP nāga ratna maṇi kuṇḍalālankrtam nava vyākaraṇa paṇḍitādi poojitam MK yāga yōga japatapa dhyānādi kārya vara prasiddham sakala lōka pālakam sangeeta shāstra rāga tāḷā bhāvapradam sadānanda sahitam C mātanga mukha chandrabimba vadanam mahā tripura sundaree nandanam ātanka mukha bhakta manōratha abheeshṭa varapradāyakam sundaram nāda lōlam nirāmaya kōsham naḷina vilōchana ravi kōṭi prakāsham MK vēda nigama sakalāgama sannuta vitaraṇa guṇa sheelam bālam vēda vēdānta bōdhaka chaturam vyāsa vinuta mahaneeyam vāram vāram vāram ================== Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi, a composer of time-transcending brilliance and encyclopedic erudition, is said to have lived approximately between 1700-1765.
