This is a masterclass in super ultralight backpacking. An in-depth exploration of the knowledge, techniques, equipment, and philosophy behind carrying an extraordinarily lightweight backpacking system, featuring one of the most meticulous and experienced ultralight backpackers I've ever met. ABOUT THIS MASTERCLASS Portrait has spent more than 15 years refining the art of super ultralight backpacking. He has completed the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail, and on his very first thru-hike, he carried a base weight of under five pounds. What makes Portrait exceptional is not simply how little his backpack weighs. It's the extraordinary depth of thought behind every decision. Much of his equipment is handmade, modified, or carefully selected through years of experimentation. He meticulously documents his gear and approaches backpacking with a level of precision and curiosity that is rarely encountered. Throughout this conversation, we explore the principles behind super ultralight backpacking: how materials perform, how equipment interacts, where weight can be eliminated, where additional weight is justified, and how experience changes our understanding of what is truly necessary.
