Racing in the Rain: ND2 Miata on Bridgestone RE-71RZ

With the Mazda RX-8 out of commission for front wheel bearings and a rear differential upgrade, my friend Meyer graciously offered me a co-drive at the recent Porsche Club (PCA) Chesapeake autocross at Ripken Stadium in his dialed-in and super fast ND2 Miata, which is prepped for SCCA's A Street Touring (AST) autocross class. We had big aspirations to take the top time of the day... that is, until our session was the only one of three to get pouring rain! However, the rain enhanced the challenge of learning a fast car quickly in difficult conditions, and made car control particularly crucial; it is very easy to lose the rear in a peppy, short wheelbase RWD car. Fortunately, things began to try a little bit until we were in mostly damp conditions for our final runs and I was able to lay down a competitive time on my final "full send" run. I learned that the Bridgestone RE-71RZ is fantastic; it had impressive grip in full rain conditions and ramped up pace quickly as the course dried out.
