The Bullet-Riddled Ground of Sand Creek Just Got Even Stranger A grey stone monument went up above the bend of the Big Sandy in 1950, and people laid wreaths there for almost 50 years before anyone swept the ground and found nothing, because nothing ever happened on that spot. In this one I go through how they finally found the real site, and what came out of the soil: fragments of four separate 12 pounder howitzer shells, which matches the four cannon Chivington brought, and tin cups and iron kettles beaten flat on purpose, kettles that match the government's own annuity records. The part that gets me is that detail, government kettles crushed by government soldiers after those families had been told they were protected. I will be honest about where I land on this, the report saying there was very little evidence of defensive fighting anywhere in the camp settles it, that is the ground calling Chivington a liar 135 years later. And the sand pits where families dug into the creek bank to hide the children have still never been found.
