F1 1989 Round 16 Australian GP Race

Dennis went on to allege that the stewards' report from Suzuka had been substantially altered before being presented. On paper, Senna still had a mathematical shot at the title, but only if he won in Adelaide and the appeal succeeded. The weekend also marked the end of the road for several careers, with René Arnoux, Eddie Cheever and Piercarlo Ghinzani all bowing out of Formula One for good. Then the weather intervened. A heavy rainstorm hit Adelaide on Sunday, leaving the track sheeting water and visibility down to just a few metres. Several frontrunners, Prost and Berger among them, went aquaplaning off during a hastily arranged extra warm-up session, and senior drivers walked the grid urging colleagues to refuse to start. The race went ahead regardless, only for a first-lap collision to trigger an immediate red flag. A restart followed over the original distance, conditions barely improved, and Prost pulled into the pits early to protest, retiring on the spot.
