Johannes Vermeer, Vermeer technique, camera obscura
This painting does something only a camera should be able to do. Vermeer painted The Lacemaker around 1670, about 356 years ago and more than 150 years before the oldest surviving photograph. Yet the threads in the foreground blur and spill like an out-of-focus lens, while the lacemaker's hands stay razor sharp. How did a 17th-century painter capture an effect no human eye sees on its own? Did Vermeer secretly use an optical device to paint what he saw?
