31 December 2022, 11:09 p.m. Foshan, City Island Youth Culture Market.
Less than an hour until the new year. Crowds everywhere, music blasting. Then I saw a plastic toy—a plastic child, holding a plastic lion head.
———
Not an ordinary toy.
Flip a switch, and it moves left and right with the music. Up and down, like a real lion dance—head rising, falling, rising again. Mechanical. Plastic. Yet somehow, its rhythm echoed the real lion dance team nearby.
It just sat there on the stall counter, moving. Lion head swaying, bobbing, dancing. Children gathered around. One reached out to touch; an adult pulled him back.
———
Watching it move, a line came to mind:
“When you look at the world with sparkling eyes, the world embraces you with open arms.”
This plastic child can't speak, has no eyes. But its lion head keeps bobbing. Up. Down. Up. Down. As if watching the world too.
———
Lion and boy.
In Guangdong, the lion dance is a ritual—warding off evil, bringing blessings. New Year's Day, lion teams go door to door, drums pounding, firecrackers popping. Young dancers train for years: horse stance, lion head lifts, drum rhythms.
This “lion boy” is plastic. His lion has a switch, batteries, moves at the flick of a button.
But so what?
The way it was designed. The rhythm of its movement. Its encounter with this new year—same as the spirit of lion dance boys centuries ago.
———
Quirky. Lovable.
The vendor said: “New this year. Selling fast.” I asked the name. “Electric lion head. Kids love it.”
I stood there watching for a long time.
The lion head kept bobbing.
Up. Down. Up. Down. Up.
———
Another way into the world.
You don't need to really dance to know lion dance joy.
You don't need to really be alive to look at the world with sparkling rhythm.
