Can you hear what you normally don't hear? In Episode six of This Is NOT About Longevity, Rev Doc Craig joins me as we continue exploring the first of Dr. Arun Naik's 10 pieces of advice for longevity: sleep. But this conversation takes us beyond the bedroom and into the rhythm of the entire day. Rev Doc Craig begins by helping us set an intention: with God's help, can we become more aware of what is already happening around us? That brought me back to Winnie-the-Pooh and the idea of hearing what is not normally heard. We explore Benjamin Franklin's practice of beginning the day by considering the good he could do and ending it by reflecting on the good he had done. What happens if we approach our own day by asking: How can I be of service today? Nature becomes our teacher as we talk about birds, patterns and the extraordinary vision of the eagle—the ability to soar high enough to see the enormous landscape while still noticing the tiny movement of a rabbit or fish below. Can we learn to hold both views? Can we see the big picture while noticing the small things? And can we notice them without immediately judging them? We also continue our exploration of better sleep, touching on Dr. Matthew Walker's discussion of a cooler sleeping environment. In the next episode, we'll go deeper into the practical science of sleep—temperature, fresh air, light, routines, aroma and more. This week's invitation Take a few moments and simply listen. Listen to the birds. Listen to your body. Listen to another person without preparing your answer. Listen for something you normally wouldn't notice. Like Horton, perhaps we can discover that something doesn't need to be loud to matter. Maybe longevity isn't only about adding more days to our lives. Maybe it's about becoming awake enough to notice the days we already have. Less Doing. More Being. Check in. Check out. Notice. OneFamily. OneWorld. Kind people. Brighter tomorrows.
