57 year old trams M29 in Gothenburg, Sweden

Filmed in Gothenburg, Sweden, on the 19th of August 2026. The M29 trams are Gothenburg’s oldest trams and were delivered between 1969 and 1972 by Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik. The oldest are therefore 57 years old. Of the original 60 delivered cars, 44 are still in service. In 2026 it was decided that 40 M29 trams would be sent to Ukraine, starting in autumn 2026 and continuing until the turn of the year 2027/2028. The last to be sent will be the 20 trams that were in Västerås between 2022 and 2025 for rust overhaul. When the M29 entered service in 1969, they looked very similar to the two other pedal trams, M25 and M28, which had been delivered from 1958 and 1965 respectively. M29 was thus the last and most modern pedal tram to start operating in Gothenburg during the 1950s and 1960s. As enough M29 units entered service, the older M23 series was decommissioned. After the M29, it would not be until the 1980s and the M21 (later M31) before the fleet was renewed again. With the introduction of the M21, the first pedal tram M25 began to be phased out. After this, it would be a long time before the older trams started to be phased out again. With the conversion of the M21 to M31 between 1998 and 2003, and the introduction of the M32 trams between 2004 and 2013, the M28s still remained in service. Due to the demand for tram travel, it was not until 28 October 2021 that the M28 urgently had to be taken out of service after serious rust damage was discovered. By that time, the newest tram, the M33, had already been running on Gothenburg’s streets since September 2020. With the continued deliveries of the M33 tram and now also the M34, the M29 can be planned for decommissioning as more M34 trams are put into service.
