All the songs on "Modes of the Moon" were drafted in 2022 and ever since then I have been working on them on and off. The release was delayed mostly because of IRL stuff but also because I wasn't satisfied with the results at first. This concept album now sounds better than ever and I'm also doing better. It was made with Renoise Tracker. Each track explores a different scale/mode with the minor 2nd, which makes them very suitable for goa & psytrance music. Further, the 3 locrian tracks are a type of miniseries within the album because these modes are inherently unstable and tend to "collapse" into nearby modes or their parent scales, IE. Harmonic Minor for Locrian Natural 6. Each track in this miniseries tackles these instabilities differently, and they turned into an exercise in voice leading and composition for me more than anything else, so I spaced them out evenly between the more stable tracks and gave them titles that reflect their respective solutions. For the last two tracks (Locrian Logos & Javanese Trip) I also decided to scale down the arrangement and production to make the album more varied. Usually this is done by lowering the tempo but i did this instead. Less advanced DSP chains and engineering for more pure & raw tracker sounds directly from the 90s, mostly as a hint to my first album. The Album Edit of Phrygian Dream came about because I wanted to fix the Juno volume during the bridge section and re-balance the riff a bit, so I took the opportunity to also make the intro a little shorter after feedback from the YouTube release. The latter change warranted an edit name I think. Album early access model working as intended!
