The market week ending October 9, 2026, read through an options lens.
Stocks rose, but the bond market and small caps told a more cautious story. The S&P 500 closed at 7,811.54, up 1.15%, while QQQ gained only 0.23% to 751.27 and IWM fell about 0.9%. Breadth rebounded 10.28 percentage points, yet only 34.93% of S&P 500 stocks finished above their 50-day moving average. VIX finished at 14.84.
Last week's stress rule HELD: VIX did not close above 20 on any day, with a highest daily close of 15.52. The rule requires VIX above 20 AND breadth below 60 on the same daily close. HELD describes the rule, not a clean bill of health for the market.
Premium cooled. IV Rank finished at 25.57 for QQQ, 11.8 for SPY and 13.02 for IWM. All three fell. A lower IV Rank is not a safety signal.
The 10-year Treasury yield traded near 5.36% midweek before finishing at 5.24%, down 4 basis points Friday to Friday. The minutes of the Fed's September meeting showed most participants saw another rate increase as likely by year-end, with decisions data dependent. Preliminary Michigan consumer sentiment slipped to 46.3, with one-year inflation expectations at 4.7%. Brent crude finished Friday around $104.72.
We also compare the prior-Friday VIX weekly estimate of 2.12% with the absolute SPX close-to-close return of 1.15%. That endpoint return is not realized volatility. The new forward weekly estimate is about 2.06%, not a guaranteed range.
Next week: September CPI on Wednesday, PPI on Thursday, import and export prices on Friday, and major US bank earnings. Confirm each issuer's date and time. These are event-risk examples, not trade recommendations.
