Searchers of the dead were old women paid a few pence a corpse to strip the body and look for plague tokens, and in Elizabethan London their word decided whether your whole family got padlocked inside the house for six weeks. That is one small corner of this one. The rest covers every major epidemic of Tudor England: the sweating sickness that killed healthy men between dinner and supper and vanished after 1551, the bubonic plague of 1563 and 1603, the forgotten influenza of 1557, the Oxford Black Assize, Elizabeth I’s smallpox, and the syphilis rumours around Henry VIII. The cures were often worse.
