SPACE METEORS LIVE | Radio and Visual Meteor Detection
Welcome to SPACE METEORS, broadcasting live from the Root River Valley near Hokah, Minnesota, USA. We monitor meteors using radio signals and a sensitive night-sky camera.
*RADIO MONITOR — OUR DEFAULT VIEW*
Our Radio Monitor operates day and night, detecting radio signals reflected by ionized meteor trails high in Earth's atmosphere. We update our viewing outlook daily with a *GO / NO-GO* decision based on expected sky conditions. When skies cooperate, we switch to our live visual meteor camera shortly after sunset.
*WHAT YOU'RE SEEING*
Three radio receivers monitor distant television signals on Channels 2, 3, and 5. The scrolling waterfalls reveal meteor reflections as bright streaks and bursts. Vintage signal meters display radio activity, while live counters, graphs, weather information, and space-weather data help tell the story of meteor activity throughout the day and night. Meteors can be detected by radio even in daylight or cloudy weather!
*LIVE VISUAL METEORS*
When conditions permit, our camera watches the night sky above the Root River Valley. Yellow boxes automatically highlight potential meteors detected in real time. Not every detection is a meteor, but many reveal fleeting streaks of light that might otherwise go unnoticed. Radio detections continue alongside the camera, allowing viewers to occasionally witness the same meteor both visually and by radio.
Listen closely! Our camera microphone also captures the natural sounds of the valley at night, including owls, coyotes, and other nocturnal wildlife.
*SPACE METEORS — When the sky speaks, we listen.*
