A violent storm destroyed the ship, but all 275 people on board swam safely to the shores of the bay, marking the legendary arrival of Christianity on the island. -*The Legend of the Miraculous Fountain*: Tucked away in the bay is the Għajn Rażul fountain. Local tradition says that shortly after coming ashore, the survivors of the shipwreck were desperate for freshwater. St. Paul struck the limestone ground with his walking staff, and a fresh water spring miraculously burst forth from the rock to quench everyone's thirst. -*From a Quiet Fishing Outpost to a Summer Escape*: For centuries, St. Paul's Bay was just a tiny, quiet fishing village protected by watchtowers built by the Knights of St. John.
