The Rise & Fall of Modern Warfare (2007–2026)

In 2007, one game rewrote the rules of online shooters. Two years later its sequel had the biggest launch in entertainment history, and a few months after that the men who made it were fired. This is the full story of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: COD4's revolution, the record-breaking MW2, No Russian, the Infinity Ward lawsuits and the birth of Respawn, the jetpack years and the Infinite Warfare backlash, the 2019 reboot, Warzone's pandemic boom, the MWIII "rushed development" controversy, Microsoft's $68.7 billion takeover, and Modern Warfare 4 (2026). The wins and the fails. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 Cold open: the biggest launch ever 1:07 Chapter 1: Before Modern Warfare 3:06 Chapter 2: The Revolution 6:27 Chapter 3: The Biggest Launch Ever 9:14 Chapter 4: The Studio Breaks 11:43 Chapter 5: Finishing the Trilogy 13:46 Chapter 6: Lost in the Future 16:13 Chapter 7: The Reboot 17:54 Chapter 8: Warzone and the Boom 19:32 Chapter 9: The Sequel Problem 22:29 Chapter 10: A New Owner 24:48 Chapter 11: Modern Warfare 4 📚 KEY SOURCES • Activision press releases & investor results (MW2/MW3/MWII sales; Q4 2020 results) • BBC News, "Modern Warfare 2 takes $1bn in sales" (Jan 13, 2010) • Activision Form 8-K (Mar 2010); West & Zampella v.
