It burned in 34 seconds. Thirty-six people died. But a 14-year-old cabin boy, a vaudeville acrobat and the captain in command all walked out of the Hindenburg — and none of them should have.
In this video, we follow the last flight of the Hindenburg through the eyes of the three men who escaped it: Werner Franz, soaked by a bursting water tank and running out through the fire; Joseph Späh, smashing a window with his movie camera and dropping from the ledge as the ship fell; and Captain Max Pruss, who stayed in the control car to the end, walked out burned beyond recognition, and went back in for his crew. The fire was over in half a minute. The question of what started it never was.
