(Be sure to wear earbuds/headphones for optimal listening! Binaural audio segments: 0:00 - 0:52 & 9:46 - 22:11)
Location: Leander / Cedar Park, TX
On the morning of June 16th, Sunday (Father's Day), exactly one week after the June 9th storm complex, the Storm Prediction Center issued an Enhanced Risk for severe weather for virtually the entire Hill Country. Later in the day, the Enhanced Risk was updated and spanned from San Angelo to as far east as Burton, TX in Washington County into Monday, the 17th, with damaging winds and hail being the greatest threats respectively. Into the afternoon, the Dallas-Forth Worth area experienced multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms. It wasn't until much later that evening that storms began to arrive in Central Texas, with a strong cell heading southwards out of Coryell and Bell Counties. Before entering Williamson County from the north, a couple showers developed and clustered into the larger, dominant cell around 11 AM. The tail end of the thunderstorm is what you see arriving at the beginning of the video, with a cloud-to-ground bolt striking ahead of the storm very close to my location, causing me to stop recording and retreat inside. 15 or so minutes later, the storm passed and continued to strengthen, eventually becoming severe warned three minutes before midnight. Now Monday, the 17th, I step out on my front porch and witness an incredible nonstop lightning show with seemingly never-ending rumbles of thunder. I grab my camera and sound recorder and leave them on the porch, going back inside to check on the weather. Later on, I return to the front porch with my binaural mics and record, catching many amazing strikes and even distant power flashes (18:15 & 19:39 in the video) until the storm weakened and moved into Travis County around 12:40 AM. Another, albeit weaker thunderstorm developed behind it shortly before the cell of interest went severe warned, but it weakened significantly shortly before the main thunderstorm ahead of it did, thus concluding a very eventful night (towards the end of the video, you can hear rumbles of thunder behind me from said weaker storm, starting at 20:53 in the video).
