Never Throw Out This Fallen Branch—It May Be Full of Life

Never Throw Out This Fallen Branch—It May Be Full of Life That fallen branch in the corner of your garden isn't yard waste. It's a city. Beneath the bark of a single dead limb, an entire hidden world is at work — beetle larvae that spend up to seven years growing in total darkness, fungi performing chemical alchemy older than the dinosaurs, springtails by the thousands, and tiny venomous pseudoscorpions catching rides on passing beetles. Ecologists call these creatures saproxylic — the rot-dwellers — and they may make up a quarter of all species in many forests. In this episode, we kneel down beside one fallen branch and slowly zoom out — from the grub in the heartwood, to the fungus that changed Earth's history, to the birds, shrews, and hedgehogs quietly living off "dead" wood — and discover why the tidiest gardens are often the emptiest ones. This autumn… maybe just leave one. 🍂 ─────────────────────────── ⏱ CHAPTERS ─────────────────────────── 0:00 – The Garden Before Dawn 1:00 – A City Disguised as Debris 2:00 – The Word "Saproxylic" 3:15 – The Cost of Tidiness 4:30 – The Seven-Year Grubs 6:00 – The Fungus That Ended an Era 7:45 – Springtails, Mites & Beetle Riders 9:30 – The Backyard Supply Chain 11:00 – Deadwood & the Carbon Cycle 12:15 – Older Than the Flowers 13:30 – A Change of Tenants 14:30 – Look Again Tomorrow ─────────────────────────── 🌱 WHAT DID YOU NOTICE? ─────────────────────────── The next time you looked at your own yard — what had been there all along?
