He had been arrested in Cambodia a day before. There, he held a royal title and had been an adviser to the prime minister. His company, Prince Group, owned a bank and a casino and, American prosecutors say, walled compounds where laborers ran scams. Now in Brooklyn, the US government wants to keep 127,271 bitcoin it says belonged to him: a total worth around $15 billion on the day of the filing. They had flowed out of his wallets in about two hours in December 2020. His lawyers have told the court he can't even sign his own responses to the filing because nobody outside China can reach him.
