Since I'm taking a machining class this semester at the local community college, I'm learning the proper way how to do things with my mini mill and mini lathe. I recently published a video on picking up the tramming tool and indicator (a very sensitive 0.0005" indicator) as well as picking up the shim stock.
This video is putting all those parts together and to use so I can tram the mini mill as well as the vise. Of the two processes, tramming the vise was MUCH easier and faster. Tramming the mill was a bit more complicated due to my original approach (different equipment that what is at school...much more high end as compared to what I have at home). I was doing the opposite of what I should be doing by focusing on adding shims to what I thought were the low points. Glad I caught that or things would have taken a LONG...really LONG time!
I'm happy with the results, again, considering what type of mini mill I have and how it gets adjusted. I'm at about 0.001" which will be more than fine for anything I need to do. The vise is coming in at 0.00025". Good stuff!
