British Tourists Thought America Was Just Cities… Then They Pulled Off the Motorway

Then they pulled off the motorway. A man from Australia stands on a beach in Florida and says, on camera, that he feels like he's been lied to his entire life — because this beach is as good as anything back home, and if you only ever saw this country in the headlines you'd have no idea it existed. Somebody else stares at Lake Michigan and refuses to accept it isn't the sea. There's no far shore. There are waves. He says he can see Iceland, which is wrong by about three thousand miles and also completely understandable — Britain's largest lake is fourteen miles long, and that one is three hundred. A Brit and his partner turn off a paved road onto a dirt track on the side of a mountain, because it was there, and find something they can only describe as paradise. No viewpoint, no visitor centre, nobody else in the car park. And a Scotsman drives out at dusk specifically to look at insects. Fireflies don't exist in Britain — not rare, absent. So a grown man is standing in a field at nightfall filming small lights in the dark and calling them wee beasties. A woman from Wales says the same thing from West Virginia, which is not a state most visitors have ever considered. Somebody else looks at an ordinary street in Ohio and starts imagining waking up there. That's usually where these end up. It starts as scenery and turns into arithmetic about whether you could stay. Which is a problem, because most of them have a flight home — and one of them went back to a flat in Britain and said, on camera, that it's boring now.
