Join us as we dive deep—literally—into Lava Beds National Monument in northern California! This park covers 46,000+ acres and is home to more than 500 lava tube caves, historic sites, and surreal volcanic landscapes. Our adventure began at the Visitor Center before venturing underground into a variety of caves ranging from easy to moderate. From the lit pathways of Mushpot Cave to the wide passages of Sentinel Cave, and finally the glowing ceilings of Golden Dome Cave, every stop revealed something new. We also explored Valentine Cave, Skull Cave, and Sunshine Cave—each with unique formations, history, and that unforgettable golden shimmer created by hydrophobic bacteria. But Lava Beds isn’t just caves—above ground we hiked trails leading past Natural Bridge, spatter cones like Fleener Chimneys, and historic spots tied to the Modoc War and ancient Indigenous rock art. The mix of geology, history, and wildlife makes this monument an underrated gem for any road trip. We wrapped up the day camping at Indian Well Campground, the only developed campground in the monument—simple, quiet, and perfectly placed for a cave-filled adventure.
