What the font?! When you look at an album cover, how much thought do you actually give to the type?
On this episode of Judged by the Cover, Josh and Phil are talking all things typography, fonts, and album cover art. From fonts that accidentally became iconic to carefully crafted typography that was designed to feel imperfect, the type on an album cover can say a lot about an artist before you ever hear a note.
We take a look at some iconic album covers and ask: Why does the font feel right? What happens when you change it? And how much does typography actually influence the identity of an album or artist?
We start with Nirvana and the story behind the recognizable typography that became part of the band's visual identity, then compare different font choices on Weezer's Blue Album and talk about why some seemingly simple fonts just feel like the artist.
From there, we jump into Charli XCX's Brat, where intentionally distorted, stretched, lowercase typography and that unmistakable green helped create an aesthetic that felt messy, confident, unpolished, and completely intentional. We also take a look at Pink Floyd's The Wall and how simple, almost handwritten typography can become an instantly recognizable piece of album artwork.
But this isn't just a conversation about fonts. It's a conversation about album cover design, artist identity, creative decisions, and collaboration.
Josh also shares some advice for musicians creating their own album artwork: don't overthink it. Find the typography that communicates the energy and message of your music, commit to something, and get the music out into the world.
And Phil talks about what it's like to have a graphic designer act as a "new set of ears"—someone who isn't quite as close to the music and can bring a fresh perspective to the visual side of a project.
So whether you're a musician, designer, music fan, or someone who just loves digging into the stories behind great album covers, this one is for you.
