The entire story of the Crusades, told as a calm history for sleep. In November 1095, Pope Urban II spoke to a great crowd in a field outside Clermont, and his words set people walking toward Jerusalem for two hundred years, yet nobody there wrote down a single word while he spoke.
We follow Peter the Hermit and the People's Crusade along the road east, then the great lords at Constantinople, where Emperor Alexios asked them for oaths. The story moves through the long, hungry winter at Antioch, the rope ladder that opened its walls, and the summer of 1099 at Jerusalem. Then we see how the Franks who stayed slowly became Easterners, living beside Syrian neighbors and the first Templars.
The second half follows the fall of Edessa, the young leper king Baldwin IV, and the thirst at Hattin, where the True Cross was lost and Saladin took Jerusalem. Richard the Lionheart and Saladin fought for more than a year without ever meeting, a Crusade in debt to Venice sacked Constantinople, and Louis IX was held for ransom in Egypt. It ends in 1291 with the last ships leaving Acre. This story involves great loss, and it is told gently, without graphic detail.
Narrated slowly and gently for sleep, study or quiet listening.
