The Expedition Neo is Silva’s latest compass. Why is it called "Neo"? The answer lies in its innovative needle, made from an alloy of Neodymium, Iron, and Boron. Neodymium is a key element in the needle’s construction—hence the name "Neo." But is this a real advancement or just marketing hype? In this video, I’ll put it to the test. I’ll also break down all 23 features of this compass—though if I’ve missed any, let me know in the comments! Finally, I’ll review the compass in detail and try answer to question: Is it actually any good? Also I’ll examine why Neodymium was included and what effect it has on performance. You may use these timestamps and links to go to any section of the vide and/or view any linked material I mention. 00:00 Intro 00:33 Disclaimer 01:39 Why is it called “Neo” 03:04 Parts identification This is available for download https://mapreading.co.uk/wp-content/u... 04:56 Take a bearing (azimuth) from a map 06:45 Declination 07:42 Declination: manual adjustment 08:29 Following a bearing 09:01 Following a bearing (red-in-the-shed) 09:51 What are “features” 10:33 Declination: semi-permanent adjustment 12:13 Measuring distances 12:30 Roamer or Metric Scale 12:42 Use of the Marking Hole 13:48 Use of the Inclinometer Link to Inclinometer video    • Slope angle with or without a clinometer   15:09 Review – is it good or bad ? 17:02 Baseplate improvement suggestions 20:07 Needle composition 21:09 Paul Messner’s YouTube Channel For information on outdoor equipment @PaulMessner    / @paulmessner   21:20 If it’s not broke, don’t fix it ? 22:03 How compass needle magnets work 23:24 The Silva Expedition Neo: Neodymium, Iron and Boron 23:42 The Silva Expedition Neo the needle’s composition 24:48 Is the needle rugged enough ? 25:13 Resistance to demagnetisation 26:45 Do you need to buy a Neo, now ?
