Description
How did untouchability begin in India? What is the real history of the caste system and social discrimination? This historical documentary explores the origins of untouchability, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's struggle, the Mahad Satyagraha, and the journey toward equality under the Indian Constitution.
On March 20, 1927, Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar challenged centuries of social discrimination at the Chavdar Tank in Mahad, Maharashtra. By drinking water from a public tank, he challenged a system that denied basic rights to people considered untouchable. This was not merely an act of drinking water; it became a landmark moment in India's struggle for social equality.
But when did untouchability actually begin? Did it exist in ancient India? What roles did the caste system, religious texts, ideas of purity and impurity, and social power play in its development?
In this documentary, we explore the Indus Valley Civilization, the Rigveda's Purusha Sukta, the Chandogya Upanishad, the Manusmriti, and historical references to the Chandalas. We also examine accounts by Chinese travelers Faxian and Xuanzang to understand how social exclusion was described in different periods of Indian history.
The documentary also examines Dr. Ambedkar's influential but debated theory about the origins of untouchability, including his ideas about the Broken Men, Buddhism, and the historical significance of cow worship. We compare these arguments with other scholarly interpretations rather than presenting disputed theories as established facts.
Discover the contributions of social reformers such as Sant Ravidas, Kabir, Chokhamela, and Basavanna. Learn about the Mahad Satyagraha, the burning of the Manusmriti in 1927, the Vaikom Satyagraha, the Poona Pact of 1932, and Dr. Ambedkar's role in drafting the Indian Constitution.
Article 17 of the Indian Constitution abolishes untouchability and forbids its practice in any form. But why do caste discrimination and social inequality remain important issues today?
This documentary connects ancient history with modern India, examining the origins of untouchability, the evolution of caste-based exclusion, the struggle for Dalit rights, and the continuing pursuit of equality and dignity.
If you enjoy historical documentaries, Indian history, Dr. Ambedkar's life, and stories about social reform, watch until the end.
