Although both are in the same city, actually living in each area has shown us how different everyday life can feel. Kitaoji offers easy access to the Kamo River, greenery and a quieter residential atmosphere. Nakagyo Ward, on the other hand, brings Kyoto’s history, festivals and neighborhood life much closer to our everyday routines. After living in both, our answer is that neither is simply “better.” They offer different ways of experiencing Kyoto. Kitaoji feels like a Kyoto where nature, temples and shrines are close to everyday life. Nakagyo Ward feels like a Kyoto where history, festivals and the life of the city are woven directly into the neighborhood. If you are thinking about moving to Kyoto, it may help to look beyond practical conditions such as distance from a station or supermarket, and ask yourself: “What kind of day would I like to live here?” Please note that this video is based only on the neighborhoods where we personally lived, and is not intended to represent every part of Kitaoji or Nakagyo Ward.
