We are each writers - Tenneson Woolf, Janet Trump, Jerry Nagel, Kathy Jourdain. We write fiction, non-fiction, prose, poetry, memoirs, news - from the heart, with and without a disciplined practice, often inviting ourselves to let the words write us. Writing is a healing and generative practice. Yup - the conversation was fun. The smiles and laughs are real. So is the writing. Do you write? Do you accept that you are a writer? What is your process? Linear and planned or spontaneous and fluid or some combination thereof? Do you journal? That is also writing - even if it is just for you. There is nothing that says we have to share or publish what we write. It is a choice. In this video we each talk about when we started writing, where it comes from for us, what it means, whether it takes courage to write (not so much in writing, but maybe in sharing), what people think they know about you when they read your writing compared to what you share or don't share or how that piece of writing may have shifted your identity. We speak about how other people's writing influenced us and expanded the idea of writing to song writers - how they carry notebooks with them to capture ideas and inspiration. We reference different teachers and the inspiration they have provided - Laura Lentz, Christina Baldwin as two of them. We disputed whether you can only call yourself a writer if you have a discipline of many hours a day in writing - sure the big authors who make a living off of writing... maybe they do that. The rest of us - well, it doesn't mean you can't call yourself a writer. Janet spoke about an author who wrote a big on a spreadsheet 👀 - which prompted laughter - Kathy noting that someone who writes this way may not be her people. Many authors contribute to societal change through their writing, providing language and imagery that speaks to us and our understanding of what is needed in this world - and we need them. And Tenneson read one poem from his new book of love poetry - When Love Brings Us Home.
