Originally built in the Byzantine style, but suffered numerous destructions, in the 17th-18th centuries. it was restored, fundamentally changed its appearance and is now an example of Ukrainian Baroque. One of the few surviving buildings of the Rus' era. Built in 1017-1037 by order and at the expense of the Kiev prince Yaroslav the Wise. Named in honor of Saint Sophia. It had the status of a cathedral. With interruptions, it was the residence of the Kiev metropolitans (Orthodox and Union). Until the middle of the 13th century it was used as the main church of Rus, the burial place of the great princes of Kiev. The cathedral was used for chronicling, the first library was created. It fell into disrepair in the 14th century. Restored by the efforts of Metropolitan Petro Mohyla and Hetman Ivan Mazepa. It was the main church of the St. Sophia Monastery (since 1638). Part of the National Reserve "Sophia of Kyiv" (since 1934). A monument of Ukrainian architecture and monumental painting of the 11th-18th centuries. St. Sophia Cathedral and the adjacent monastery buildings and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (together - 28.52 hectares), are a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1990, 2023)
