Athletic Tina Noyes made an effort all year long to land the first (American) ladies triple toe loop, but it never quite worked out. (Petra Burka of Canada had just done a triple salchow a few years earlier 63 - but the ladies had been slow to add the 3 rotations). She was very much in the running for a Bronze medal here, but it would have required a strong skate. She started out wonderfully, but then just fizzled on the triple attempt, and it began to be difficult after that. A Boston skater in the athletic tradition of Carol Heiss and Petra Burka, she challenged graceful Peggy Fleming in the 1960's. I found it interesting to see her tap the next skater on the shoulder, and wish her well as she came off the ice. You see very few examples of sportsmanship like that these days........
