CJP Protest: Detentions Across Delhi As Protesters Demand CEC’s Resignation

The CJP’s October 10 call for a protest demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation saw heavy police deployment, barricades and detentions across Delhi. Protesters were detained at Connaught Place, Bangla Sahib, Ashoka Road and other locations as access to Jantar Mantar remained heavily restricted. Some protesters alleged they were dragged away by police despite participating in a peaceful sit-in. The demonstration also raised questions about the Election Commission’s independence, the appointment process for election commissioners and concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. With protesters detained and access to Jantar Mantar blocked, what comes next for the CJP movement? Will it continue under its current leadership, adopt a new strategy or evolve into a broader people’s movement?
