What is Hal Jordan really trying to teach John Stewart, and why is this Green Lantern apprenticeship so unlike anything we would normally expect from the Corps? In this Lanterns deep dive, I take a detailed look at Hal and John’s night in Rushville, Nebraska, where Green Lantern training collides with bourbon, bar fights, jukeboxes, whoever Melanie is, alien mysteries, questionable uses of a power ring and some increasingly strange questions about the history of Sector 2814. The episode gives us plenty to examine around Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart. What does Hal actually mean when he talks about knowing when and when not to use the ring? Why does John still treat Green Lantern status, hierarchy and the Guardians of the Universe with such reverence? And how much of their conflict comes from two completely different ideas about authority, discretion, responsibility and what being a Green Lantern is supposed to mean? I also dig deeper into Hal Jordan’s origin story and Abin Sur. Why did Abin Sur crash near Rushville? How was Hal selected? What role did the Green Lantern ring itself play, and how does Hal’s experience compare with the unusual way John appears to have been chosen? There are some intriguing DC lore questions here involving the Guardians, Earth, Sector 2814 and why this apparently insignificant part of Nebraska keeps finding itself connected to alien activity. Then there’s Zoe. Her conversation with John touches on Green Lantern recruitment, succession, the number of Lanterns assigned to Earth, the Guardians and what happens if Hal dies. Is it simply natural curiosity, or is there anything about the exchange worth remembering as the wider mystery develops? I also look at Hal’s decision to create money with his ring, his increasingly elaborate confrontation with the locals, the significance of Melanie’s “Brand New Key,” and why an apparently ridiculous night in a small-town bar may contain some surprisingly useful clues about how this version of Hal Jordan thinks. And no I don't know how Hal's plan was supposed to work either. This is a scene-by-scene Lanterns analysis rather than a plot recap, exploring Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Green Lantern lore, Abin Sur, the Guardians of the Universe, character psychology, performance and the wider mysteries being established by the HBO and DC Studios series.
