How can ancient water become undrinkable? In this documentary, we investigate the mystery of the cleanest water on Earth—and discover why the oldest, most isolated water is not always the safest to drink.
Deep beneath the surface, scientists found groundwater trapped more than two kilometers underground in a Canadian mine. Some of this ancient water may have been isolated for nearly two billion years, long before humans, dinosaurs, or modern ecosystems existed. Yet despite its incredible age and protection from surface pollution, it was extremely salty, chemically aggressive, and filled with dissolved minerals.
This journey explores the difference between biological purity and chemical purity. Water can be free from bacteria and human contamination while still containing dangerous substances such as arsenic, fluoride, lead, mercury, radioactive elements, and other naturally occurring compounds released by rock.
We also examine glaciers, rainwater, mountain springs, deep aquifers, and the hidden chemistry of groundwater. Why doesn’t age guarantee purity? How does water slowly dissolve the planet around it? And can the cleanest-looking water actually be unsafe to drink?
Discover the science behind ancient groundwater, natural contamination, drinking water safety, and the surprising forces that can turn pristine water into undrinkable water.
