−53 °C. ±1 °C stability. 90 metres of elevation difference. CO₂ as a refrigerant.
Each of these challenges is demanding on its own.
The real challenge begins when all of them must be mastered at the same time.
This film provides rare technical insights into the cooling infrastructure of the ATLAS and CMS detectors at CERN and explores the engineering behind one of the world's most demanding CO₂ refrigeration applications.
Through interviews with the project partners and footage from CERN, the film explains why CO₂ was chosen as the refrigerant, the challenges of operating close to the CO₂ triple point, and how reliable cooling at temperatures down to −53 °C is achieved under extraordinary conditions.
For the next upgrade stage of the Large Hadron Collider, a total of 18 CO₂ refrigeration units with approximately 1.35 MW of installed cooling capacity were implemented, demonstrating how far the capabilities of natural refrigerants have evolved. 【1-ed88de】【2-b45239】
The project was realised through the collaboration of CERN, InfraSolution AG, BITZER Kühlmaschinenbau GmbH and compact Kältetechnik GmbH.
Watch the film to discover:
• Why CERN chose CO₂ for detector cooling
• The challenges of ultra-low-temperature operation
• Cooling near the CO₂ triple point
• Long-distance refrigerant transport with significant elevation differences
• The role of natural refrigerants in high-performance applications
