Old school gospel blues about the one hour of the day nobody needs anything from
you. A deep, weathered bass-baritone lead and a low male quartet, in an unhurried
walking shuffle.
Four-forty in the morning. The whole house is still asleep. He doesn't turn the
big light on — thirty years in the same dark kitchen teaches you where everything
is. He strikes a match, puts the coffee on, laces his boots, and talks to the Lord
the whole time without ever stopping what he's doing.
He doesn't ask for a fortune or a sign. He asks for enough patience to make it to
suppertime, so he won't take the day out on the people he loves.
It ain't much of a prayer. But the man who got up angry ain't the man who's
leaving here.

LYRICS
[Intro]
Four-forty in the morning.
[Verse 1]
Floor is cold against my feet
Everybody's still asleep
I don't turn the big light on
I just move the way I know
Thirty years of the same dark kitchen
Teaches you where everything is
[Verse 2]
Strike a match, the burner catches
Blue ring humming in the black
Coffee going, boots by the door
Coat still cold across my back
And I start talking like I always do
Not out loud, but He can hear
[Chorus]
It ain't much of a prayer
I don't get down on my knees
Got my hands in the sink
Got the day ahead of me
But before the world starts asking
Before anybody needs
I give the Lord the only hour
That belongs to me
[Verse 3]
I don't ask Him for a fortune
Don't ask Him for a sign
Ask Him for enough patience
To make it to suppertime
So I don't take the day out on them
When they ain't done nothing wrong
[Bridge]
Does He hear a man who's working?
He hears you where you stand
Even with my back turned?
He's been walking with your hands
Then I'll keep on talking while I work
And call it holy ground
[Verse 4]
Sky goes grey above the fence line
Something starts up in the trees
I take my coffee to the porch step
Let the cold wake up my knees
And I say amen without saying it
And I go on into the day
[Final Chorus]
It ain't much of a prayer
I still don't use my knees
But the man who got up angry
Ain't the man who's leaving here
So before the world starts asking
Before anybody needs
I give the Lord the only hour
That belongs to me
[Outro]
House is waking up behind me.
Good.
