Why Naomi Told Ruth and Orpah to Go Home | Ruth 1:11 Why did Naomi tell Ruth and Orpah to go home? In this Ruth 1:11 teaching, we study a grieving mother-in-law’s honest plea and what it reveals about loss, loyal love, and the God who is at work when we cannot see Him. Naomi had lost her husband and both sons. She believed she had nothing left to offer, so she urged the two women who loved her to leave. “But Naomi said, ‘Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?’” — Ruth 1:11 Famine had driven Naomi’s family from Bethlehem to Moab, where her husband Elimelech died, and both of her sons died after marrying Moabite women (Ruth 1:1-5). When Naomi heard that the LORD had provided food for His people, she set out for home (1:6). On the road she urged Ruth and Orpah to turn back, reasoning that she had no more sons to marry them, an argument that echoes the custom of levirate marriage (Deuteronomy 25:5-10). Her logic was practical and loving. It was also soaked in grief: she would soon ask to be called “Mara,” which means bitter (1:20). WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: The setting (Ruth 1:1-10): the famine, the move to Moab, the three funerals, and why Naomi was returning to Bethlehem “in the days when the judges ruled” “Return home, my daughters” (v. 11): why Naomi sent them away, what “Why would you come with me?” reveals about how she saw herself, and why “return” (the Hebrew verb shuv) is a key word in Ruth 1 “Any more sons?” (vv. 11-13): the reasoning behind Naomi’s argument and how it echoes levirate marriage (Deuteronomy 25:5-10) Grief that pushes people away: how loss can lead us to isolate ourselves, and why honest, bitter prayer is not a sign of weak faith (compare the laments in the Psalms) “The LORD’s hand has turned against me” (v. 13): what Naomi says about God here, and how the rest of the book gently reframes it Orpah and Ruth (vv. 14-18): two women, two choices, what the text says (and does not say) about Orpah, and what Ruth’s “Where you go I will go” shows about hesed, or loyal love Hidden providence: how a famine, a field, and a relative become the path of God’s care, and what that teaches about trusting Him when you cannot see the plan “Better than seven sons” (Ruth 4:15): how the question Naomi asks in verse 11 is answered at the end of the book Ruth in the line of Jesus (Ruth 4:17-22; Matthew 1:5): how a grieving widow’s story reaches King David and the Messiah How to walk with someone who is grieving, and how to keep going when you are the one who has lost: practical lessons from Naomi and Ruth THIS TEACHING IS FOR YOU IF YOU: Are grieving a loss and feel like you have nothing left to offer Have ever pushed away people who love you while you were hurting, or are loving someone who is doing that Are studying the book of Ruth and want to see how chapter 1 sets up the rest of the story Want to see how God works behind the scenes when life feels bitter Enjoy verse-by-verse Bible teaching that connects the Old Testament to Jesus TAKE ACTION: 🙏 PRAY: Bring your grief or disappointment to God honestly, the way Naomi did, and ask Him to show you the people He has placed beside you 👍 LIKE this video if it brought you comfort or helped you see Naomi’s story differently 📤 SHARE this message with someone who is grieving, or with someone who is supporting a person who is 📌 SUBSCRIBE for weekly, Bible-based teaching on Scripture, faith, and Christian living 🔔 TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS so you never miss a new teaching 💬 COMMENT BELOW: Who has “stayed” with you in a hard season, the way Ruth stayed with Naomi?
