It became one of the significant events in early Islamic history and is connected to a prophecy of the Prophet ﷺ concerning signs before the Hour. The Prophet ﷺ said to ʿAwf ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه: «اعْدُدْ سِتًّا بَيْنَ يَدَيِ السَّاعَةِ: مَوْتِي، ثُمَّ فَتْحُ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ، ثُمَّ مُوتَانٌ يَأْخُذُ فِيكُمْ كَقُعَاصِ الْغَنَمِ...» “Count six signs before the Hour: my death, the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis, then a widespread death that will seize you like the disease affecting sheep…” Sahih al-Bukhari 3176 The widespread death mentioned in this hadith is understood by scholars to refer to the Plague of ʿAmwās, which occurred shortly after the conquest of Jerusalem. Thousands of Muslims died during the plague, including several prominent Companions. Among them was Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ رضي الله عنه, the trustworthy companion appointed as commander in the region.
