One year ago, my family and I moved to Los Angeles and started a new life in the United States.
It has been one of the most challenging and rewarding years of my life. I found a job, became a father, built a credit history from zero, rented our first apartment, bought a car, figured out American healthcare, taxes, retirement accounts, and a lot more.
In this video, I share what I learned during my first year in America and what I wish I had known before moving.
We’ll talk about:
00:00 My First Year in America
01:16 How Much Money You Need
03:02 Finding a Job in the US
06:02 Building Your Credit Score
07:24 Renting Without Credit History
08:41 Buying a Car in America
11:34 Health Insurance & Medical Costs
14:16 Daycare & Raising a Child
15:45 Taxes in America
18:08 American Culture
19:14 English & Integration
20:33 Food & Groceries
22:04 Networking in America
24:37 401(k), Investing & Retirement
27:08 What I Learned After One Year
This isn’t a guide to the “perfect” American life - it’s my personal experience of starting from scratch and figuring things out as we went.
If you’re planning to move to the U.S., recently arrived, or are simply curious about what everyday life in America is actually like, I hope this helps.
Let me know in the comments: Where are you moving from, and where in the U.S. are you planning to live?
