This film follows the Records of the Three Kingdoms. Where a scene comes from the novel rather than the record, the narration says so. Dong Zhuo burned Luoyang, held a nine-year-old emperor, and beat every army the east sent against him. He was afraid of exactly one man. Not Cao Cao. Not Yuan Shao. A frontier officer from the Yangtze delta with no famous family, a red felt cap, and a habit of killing men who outranked him. At seventeen he walked onto a riverbank alone and bluffed a pirate gang into running. At thirty he told a chancellor to behead Dong Zhuo on the spot — and was ignored. At thirty-six he killed two provincial governors on his way north, broke Lü Bu twice, walked into the burned-out capital, and found a seal in a well that the novel says was the Mandate of Heaven itself. At thirty-seven he rode into a bamboo hill alone. An arrow came out of the trees. His name was Sun Jian. His sons would take the south and found the kingdom of Wu.
