On June 12, 2025, an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner (Flight AI171) crashed just minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport en route to London. Of the 242 people on board, 241 lost their lives in the devastating tragedy. Only one man survived—Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British-Indian.
The Sole Survivor
Vishwash was seated in 11A and sustained injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet. He blacked out and later woke amidst scattered bodies and wreckage. His brother Ajay, who was also on board, sadly did not survive. From his hospital bed, Vishwash recalled: "Thirty seconds after takeoff… there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran." He was later visited by Home Minister Amit Shah.
Missed the Flight by Minutes: Bhoomi Chauhan
Bhoomi Chauhan, a London-based visitor, missed the doomed flight by just 10 minutes due to traffic. Distraught yet thankful, she credited her narrow escape to “Ganpati Bappa” and mourned deeply for the victims: "My body is literally shivering… I can’t even talk."
Notable Victim: Vijay Rupani
Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani (2016–21) was also on board. He was travelling to London to meet his daughter, while his wife had gone ahead. She returned to Ahmedabad after the tragic news.
Rupani had a spiritual attachment to the number 1206—his car and bike plates carried it.
Ironically, he died on 12th June (12/06)—the same number.
A Family’s Final Selfie – The Doctor Couple
A moving story came from Dr. Komi Vyas and Dr. Prateek Joshi, who were relocating from Udaipur to London with their three children. Before boarding, they captured a joyful selfie with husband, daughter and twin boys—now a tragic memory.
Newlywed Khushbu Rajpurohit
Just 5 months into marriage, Khushbu was travelling to London to join her husband Vipul, a doctor.
Her father’s emotional farewell video, shared just before the crash, has gone viral.
British Couple: Jamie & Fiongal
British nationals Jamie Meek and Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek were returning home after a 10-day wellness retreat in India. Their final Instagram video said: “Goodbye India… 10-hour flight back to England.”
Moments later, tragedy struck.
Sisters From Ahmedabad: Heer & Dhir
Sisters Heer and Dhir Bakshi were among the victims. They had come for their grandmother’s 75th birthday. Their father had flown back earlier, and their mother was to join them later.
Flight Crew:
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal (Mumbai): A seasoned pilot with 8,200+ hours, known for his calm and safety-first approach. He had promised to call his 88-year-old father upon landing in London.
First Officer Clive Kundar (Kerala): A co-pilot with 1,100 hours, trained for emergencies. Rumored to be actor Vikrant Massey’s cousin, the actor clarified they were close family friends, not relatives.
