It is a UNESCO world heritage site. The Darjeeling Himalayan railway was built between 1879 and 1881 on the same hill cart road that was constructed to meet the area's growing needs. Planning for the hill road began in 1839. It is a round trip journey from Darjeeling to ghum back to Darjeeling and no extra fare is changed for the return journey from ghum to Darjeeling The full round trip takes almost 2 hours.
