In this online presentation, Altino tells about her experience, as a western-trained musician, of learning to play the traditional Korean sanjo on the violin. The process of learning to "speak Korean" on the violin closely relates to that of learning a foreign language for the first time -- enormously challenging yet immensely rewarding (1:20). A brief introduction (9:30) of the Korean tone (성음), changdan (장단), p'ansori (판소리), and sanjo (산조)* precedes the explanation and demonstration of how to interpret the unique traditional idioms on the violin (19:00).
