Integrated Water Management & The City Agenda

The environmental benefits of integrated water management (IWM) speak for themselves – what city wouldn’t want a more sustainable water supply? But using a systems approach to merge water management planning with the city’s larger agenda can offer benefits to all through improved recreation, job creation, and more. Howard Neukrug is well-known for his service as Philadelphia’s Water Commissioner where he implemented the renowned Green City, Clean Waters program, successfully forging and articulating connections between IWM and good jobs, street upgrades, and long-term savings for ratepayers. Tom Rhoads is the Commissioner of the Onondaga County, NY Department of Water Environment Protection, implementing the award-winning Save the Rain program that uses IWM approaches to not only reduce combined sewer overflows but also train Syracuse residents for green jobs, revitalize vacant lots, and restore lakeside recreation.
